Sesh Sesh is an abbreviation for a "session" or "poker
session". This term is used by pretty much every good poker player at some
time or another.
Example: "I just had an awful sesh, I took a right kicking from the other
players."
Bluff Bluff means to bet with a
rubbish hand but make the other players think you have an awesome set of
cards.
Example: A player trying to win with 9-4, on a board of A-K-K-J-6 would be
bluffing.
Fish A Fish is generally an unskilled
or inexperienced player, often the one who is playing weak or badly.
Another term for Fish is Donkey or Pigeon.
It has been said, if you can't spot the Fish at the table within half an
hour... you are the fish!
A Fish at a table is a good thing. There is nothing worse than a Fish
being told that they are a Fish! This could cause them to leave the table
with their chips (yes, the ones you want!) or even worse, encourage them to
become a great poker player which will one day come back and bite you on the
backside by taking all of your chips.
Shark A Shark is the opposite to a
Fish. The Shark is the one who usually wins and takes all of the chips
from the Fish. The Shark will be an expert player who win time after
time.
Bumhunter A Bumhunter is an online
player who sits on heads up tables, refusing to play regulars and winning
players, but waiting for the weak competition and random players.
Bumhunting is a relatively new poker term that was introduced in 2008.`
Chino Chino means to borrow money
under false pretences and/or with no specific way of repaying it.
Example: A way to chino somebody is borrowing money with collateral and
then spending the collateral, leaving no way of paying back the money.
A good way to avoid chino'ing is to play some free poker games which are 100%
free to play, and you can still win real cash!
Bet To bet is pretty much what is says
on the tin; to gamble an initial amount of money in a game of poker.
Betting increases the pot, can force your opponent players to fold and shows
the strength of your hand.
Flop, Turn & River A Flop is the
term commonly used for the first three cards face up on the board in poker.
The Flop is then followed by the fourth card, which is called a Turn.
A River is the name for the last (fifth) community card dealt. It is
also commonly known as Fifth Street.
Nuts Having the Nuts, means that you
have the best possible hand in the game.
Rake Rake is a term used for the fee
taken by a cardroom for operating the poker game. It usually ranges from
between 5% to 10% of the pot in each hand.
Rakeback Rakeback is a term used for a
rebate of money returned to a player who paid the rake in the first place,
usually from a non cardroom. Most poker rooms have third party
sources/affiliates to market the poker site.
Poker Loyalty Programs Loyalty
programs are reward programs aimed at online poker players to charm them to play
at the site. These programs are often offered by rooms that don't offer
rakeback to their players.
Chip Dumping Chip Dumping means
intentionally losing your chips on purpose to another player. It is
basically a form of cheating to aid a friend or partner to get more chips to
give them a better chance of winning. Often there will be an agreement
between the players that the winnings will be split.
Freeroll Freeroll has two main
meanings:
A tournament where there are cash or prizes available, but has entry
fee. A hand where the player is guaranteed to at least half of the pot, but
still has a chance to win the entire pot outright.
Armature players can get caught out by a freerolling opponent. If you think
that your opponent has got the same hand as you, but you would be on a freeroll
to a better hand, get him to commit all of his chips. In a cash game, you may
sacrifice a little rake, but you also have a risk-free shot at stacking your
opponent.
Pot Odds The ratio of the current pot
size, to the amount of money needed to call a bet.
Example: If the pot odds are 10-1, and the pot contains $50, then the
player must bet $5 to stay in the hand.
Fake Think To Fake Think, means to
pretend to be thinking about a poker hand, although really you have already made
a decision on what to do.
It is okay to Fake Think occasionally, but do not over do it.
Cashout To Cashout means to cash in
your chips and withdraw the money. This refers to both online poker and
casino poker.
Tilt Going 'on Tilt' means to let your
emotions rule your game. The same term is also used when a player suffers
a losing streak or has had a bad beat.
